Please enter comments about the various on-line assessments that you look at for the Gavin School District RtI initiative. Please start (and use) a new blog for each assessment tool. How about also adding the web pages that you found the information on? That will help the rest of us get to the information.

not appropriate for 8th grade
Diane, is it too young for them? Too babyish?
It only assesses grades K-6. This would not be appropriate for grades 7-8.
DIBELS is fantastic for grades K-3 if you actually use it. It gives you very specific data for you to hlep modify your teaching to maximize student potential. The other plus is we are already using it and it would not add anything else onto us in the beginning grade levels.
I forgot that DIBELS can also be linked to Storytown which is our new reading series. It will help you place the children in the sppropriate story and find missing skills.
We currently subscribe to the extra tools to help goup cihldren that are struggling with the same skills. The program also analyzes the data for you to determine the common mistakes and then provides suggested activities for remediation.
The one good thing is that we already have this in place for K-3
I would like to see how it works at the 5th grade level with an average student. I know that our at risk students would probably benefit but what good would it do the rest? Would they find it too babyish and not even try?
We love DIBELS in kindergarten, although I realize it doesn't go past 6th grade. We would prefer to keep using this, rather than learn a whole new program. It only assesses reading skills, but they are trying to keep up with the RTI trends. In January they are supposed to be adding new features(sorry for the length):
*Expand Assessment Capabilities:
-Enter data from assessments other than DIBELS (e.g., SAT-10, early math measures, state assessments).
-Create new reports that link scores from different assessments.
*Improve Instructional Decision Making:
-Document instructional plans for groups of students.
-Link users to additional intervention resources.
-Create additional reports to monitor progress of instructional groups as well as grades.
*Enable Response to Intervention (RTI) Capability and Implementation:
-Improve progress monitoring tools to document interventions and link to student response.
-Provide the capability to individualize student goals and evaluation.
*Enhance Ease of Use:
-Create additional and easy to use tools for district, school, and classroom management.
-Improve the usability of the entire Data System site.
